Quality matters
We offer several varieties of fresh sod. Harvested daily, Monday-Friday, we strive to provide the absolute best for your project needs.
Sod is available by the piece, pallet, roll, and even export.
ST. AUGUSTINE (FLORATAM, PALMETTO, SEVILLE, CITRABLUE, PROVISTA)
This grass is the most common sod used in South Florida. It is a thick bladed grass and with propermaintenance can produce a thick, beautiful, green lawn. The St. Augustine variety prefers full sun to moderate shade depending on type.
The Seville variety of St. Augustine , being the most shade tolerant, will survive with 3-5 hours of direct sunlight at minimum and is also a dwarf or slower grower. Palmetto and Provista have moderate shade tolerance and will survive with 5-7 hours of direct sunlight at minimum, and Floratam has no shade tolerance. Citrablue has moderate shade tolerance and will survive with 5-7 hours of direct sunlight at minimum (like it’s sister Palmetto) but is also a dwarf variety (like other sister Seville).
ZOYSIA (EMPIRE, ICON, CASHMERE, GEO, DIAMOND, CITRA ZOY, & ZEON )
Zoysia sod is a hardy grass. It is tolerant of high traffic conditions and is more drought resistant once established compared to other species. Zoysia tends to develop with proper maintance a thick growth which crowds out weeds and other undesirable growth.
The most common Zoysia species in South Florida is Zoysia Empire. Other common zoysia species used in South Florida are Zoysia Icon and Zoysia Diamond. Zoysia is a full sunlight sod with some species that tolerate minimal shade.
BERMUDA (TIFTON 419, CELEBRATION, TIFDWARF, TIFF TUFF, BIMINI)
This grass is suitable for residential lawns and public athletic areas. Turf types of the grass form attractive, traffic-resistant, ground covers for areas with full day sun. Bermuda grass prefers higher end management. This sod requires a real-type mower.
PASPALUM (SEASHORE, SEA ISLE, SEA DWARF, ALOHA)
This is a deep-rooted, warm green grass. The variety has been extensively planted for forage and soil stabilization, especially here in Florida. Paspalum has a good salt tolerance so it is especially well suited for coastal use or areas that are irrigated from salt water or high PH content. Proper care and maintenance requires a real type or low cutting sharp mower.
BAHIA (ARGENTINE, PENSACOLA)
This grass is suitable for low-maintenance lawns, public areas, and is recommended for infertile soils and heavy traffic areas. Bahia grass is more commonly seen on side of roadways and canal / lake banks and is excellent for erosion control. Other common uses are on construction sites for dust suppression and areas that lack irrigation systems as Bahia is very drought tolerant once established.
CENTIPEDE
This sod has a coarse texture that grows close to the ground. The variety is rather tolerant, and when healthy, is highly shade tolerant. More commonly seen in Northern Florida.
Answer: No, there are some species with shade tolerance but no sod will survive in complete shade. Sod needs sunlight to grow, some sods require more sunlight than others.
Answer: Depending on the species sod should be mowed minimum bi-weekly for St. Augustine's and some Zoysia's with a rotary mower. Other species such as finer bladed Zoysia or Bermuda's should be mowed weekly with a real-type lawn mower.
Answer: New sod watering requirements are different from established sod. ALL yards have different environmental conditions and should be adjusted accordingly depending on sunlight, Mother Nature's rainfall, and drainage. Overwatering can be just as bad as under watering- do not overwater to compensate. Ask us for our new sod watering guide if needed. DO NOT rely on Mother Nature solely or sprinklers as coverage can vary in high winds or sprinkler errors.
Answer: New sod is more susceptible to bugs/fungus, however, even established yards can suffer. We do live in South Florida where bugs and fungus promoting habitats thrive- protect your yard by spraying. We suggest calling a licensed knowledgable YARD spray guy (not the indoor pest control people unless they are well versed in lawns too).
Testimonials
Exceptional quality and customer service! The Sunset Sod team is by far the best in the business.
The talented folks, at Sunset Sod, were extremely helpful in assisting me by planting new lawn, where there had been pretty serious weed and sun damage. The income property, in South Beach, looks like a whole new property. Katie was extremely kind and went above and beyond, the call of duty, in helping me on this project!
Sunset Sod did a fabulous job on my yard. I admit that I had my sprinklers fixed before the install and had it spayed for fungus and insects right after...just like they recommended. They are experts so I followed all of their advice and got a great result! I love my yard now!
I cannot say enough about the excellent service I received from the professionals at Sunset Sod. Katie gave me good advice on which type of sod to use, and was so patient and helpful as we figured how much sand and sod to purchase. They went the extra mile to facilitate a delivery at the last minute because I had help available. This level of service is unusual in Miami and so appreciated! They can expect many referrals from this family!
